Raleigh
The City of Oaks, and a capital city drawn on paper before a single street was built.
Life in Raleigh
Raleigh is North Carolina’s capital and the anchor of the Research Triangle, known as the City of Oaks for its oak-lined streets. You get state museums, a major university, a 308-acre park on the edge of downtown, and neighborhoods ranging from historic homes near downtown to newer communities on the edges of the city.
Raleigh highlights
Dorothea Dix Park
The City of Raleigh acquired the 308-acre Dix Park from the State of North Carolina in 2015, and the park sits on the edge of downtown with views of the skyline.
State museums
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences sits downtown, and the North Carolina Museum of Art’s outdoor park is one of the largest art parks in the country.
NC State University
North Carolina State University brings research, sports, and a college-town energy to the west side of the city.
A growing capital
Raleigh counted 467,665 residents in the 2020 U.S. Census, inside a Research Triangle region of more than 2.37 million people.
How Raleigh began
In 1787 the legislature decided the state capital would sit within ten miles of Isaac Hunter’s tavern in Wake County, and in March 1792 a state commission bought 1,000 acres of Senator Joel Lane’s plantation for £1,378. Surveyor William Christmas drew the city plan that same year around Union Square, a six-acre site for the State House, and Governor Alexander Martin suggested naming the new city for Sir Walter Raleigh, who sent the first colonists to North Carolina.
A fire destroyed the first statehouse in 1831, and the State Capitol that stands on Union Square today was completed in 1840. The city limits expanded for the first time in 1857, and the founding of nearby Research Triangle Park in 1959 brought the growth in people and business that still shapes the region.
